How do I maintain a freezer properly?

A freezer’s main purpose is to ensure that the food inside is both kept from molding and will be kept tasty once it is reheated. If the food was not going to spoil, it would be placed inside of the refrigerator – meaning one can reasonably expect that any food they put inside the freezer is expected to mold if not kept to the correct temperature.

This assumes two things:

1.      That the freezer is cold enough to freeze the food.

2.      That the freezer has been maintained, in order to be most efficient.

When you are helping to maintain your freezer foods, there are a variety of tips that will help you do so correctly.

Tips for Maintaining Freezers

1.      Keep Lots of Food Closely Packed

Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of maintaining a freezer is that the most efficient method is to keep your freezer packed at all times. The emptier your freezer, the more it will release cold air when it’s open, and the longer the compression will take in order to cool the food inside again. By packing the freezer to the brim, the foods are able to maintain themselves, and the air inside will easily cool down again as soon as you close the door.

2.      The Colder the Temperature, the Less Spoiling Risk

It is assumed that any freezing temperature will stop spoiling, and this is not entirely true. Because foods tend to warm and cool, if your freezer is too warm (even though it is below freezing level), the food inside can still get old and spoil. Your best bet is to keep your freezer below 0 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure that all of the foods inside are kept cold.

3.      Clean Out Your Freezer Regularly and Often

Heavy amounts of frost can ruin food as well as make a big mess. In order to reduce the amount of ice and frost that occurs, when you clean your freezer it is a good idea to keep a rag underneath so that any dripping water will get soaked into the washcloth and not freeze to the bottom. It is also a good idea to remove all of the frost in full so that it doesn’t build up to the point of being difficult to remove.

Properly Maintained Freezers Ensure Your Food is Kept Safe

The better job you do maintaining your freezer, the less likely your food will spoil and the better tasting it will be over long periods of time. Whether it involves how you organize the food (filling it up to keep your food cold) or simply cleaning it out and checking to make sure it is working properly, it is important that you do whatever you can to keep your freezer working properly. Food in a freezer can still spoil if things go wrong, and when that occurs you will not only waste food but put yourself at risk for serious food borne illness.
