Water and Ice Dispensers in a Refrigerator
When you are ready to choose your new fridge you
will be able to select from several different options. One of the options
you will have to choose is whether or not you want to have a water and/or
ice dispenser in the front of your fridge. There are many different benefits
and weaknesses of having one of these features available, and you should
consider them carefully before you decide whether you want to make your
purchase.
Benefits of Water/Ice Dispensers
·
If you like cold water or ice and you
do not have a dispenser, chances are you will go inside of your fridge every
so often to get these items out. Every time you open the door, you let the
cold air out, which makes it more likely your food items will get warm and
your fridge will have to cool back down.
·
Having water and ice dispensers on the
front door is very convenient, and since both are much colder than you would
get from the tap, this can be quite enjoyable.
·
Ice dispensers, especially, can be very
useful, especially if they chop and crush ice on their own.
Weaknesses of Water/Ice Dispensers
·
Water and ice dispensers use extra
energy, which makes your refrigerator less energy efficient. Though there
may be an advantage in energy savings (due to the fact that your
refrigerator will have to cool down less because you are opening the door
with less frequency), that still does not address the fact that they use
energy at a less efficient rate than refrigerators without these dispensers.
·
You have to have a location around your
home where getting one of these is beneficial. Often times the area of a
kitchen designed for the refrigerator is not equipped with the pipes
necessary to run one of these machines, and the cost of installing those
pipes may greatly outweigh the benefits of using this type of fridge.
·
Water and ice dispensers are going to
raise the cost of the refrigerator quite a bit, despite the technology to
run them being fairly simple.
Overall Thoughts on Water and Ice
Dispensers
Water an ice dispensers are more a matter of
personal preference than of whether or not they are truly beneficial. In
many ways, it seems as though the people that are planning on using them
often are the ones that benefit the most – not just because of the
convenience, but because of the energy they will save from opening and
closing the door too often. On the flip side, those that do not think they
are going to have much use for these features should generally avoid them,
as the increase in energy use will not be worth the small/minor convenience
of getting ice or water on very rare occasions.
Ice and water dispensers are very useful features
for refrigerators for those that are going to use them. For those that are
not, they are simply “Okay,” and may not be worth the time.
